Counselling is a form of talk therapy that helps people work through issues in a safe, supportive environment with a professional. It can help you with a wide range of problems from anxiety and depression to relationship issues, substance abuse and trauma. The goal is to help you learn how to manage these problems and make positive changes in your life.

The first step in counselling is building a trusted, therapeutic relationship with your therapist. They should be empathetic and nonjudgmental to give you the space to open up and discuss your personal problems. A good therapist will ask you questions to get an understanding of your issues, how you think and feel about them and what may be contributing to them. They will also pay attention to your body language and facial expressions to make sure you are feeling comfortable with sharing your thoughts and feelings.

After the introductory stage, your therapist will assess your issues to find out what the primary problem is. They will encourage you to speak in detail about your problems and will observe each and every thing, from the way you are speaking to how you react to their questions. They will take note of the details and then they will provide you with a proper plan to help you regain your self-esteem. The plan they provide will vary according to the counselling theory your therapist follows. Some therapists use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which focuses on changing negative thought patterns and others follow Person-Centred approaches which aim to engage the client’s natural self-actualizing tendencies.
