The packaging system uses a water-soluble film to deliver premeasured chemicals and helps prevent spills, overflows and contamination in the workplace. The machine can package a variety of products including agricultural chemicals, water treatment chemicals, concrete additives and super absorbent polymers. The package is made from a non-toxic, edible, cellulose-based film, which dissolves completely in cold water. The film can be converted into bags or pouches on most vertical form fill seal machines and is available in sizes up to 10” / 380mm long.
Various optional ingredients can be included in the film compositions of the present invention, such as plasticizers that are liquid at room temperature and/or surfactants or compatibilizers. The plasticizers may include, but are not limited to glycerol, diglycerol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, propylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, polyether polyols, and/or combinations thereof.
The sealing solution can be applied directly to the water-soluble film surface or it may be sealed to the water-soluble film using heat. The sealing solution may be a single solvent or multiple solvents which are selected for their compatibility with the polymeric components of the water-soluble film. The sealing solution can also be used to shape the water-soluble film before or after it is sealed to a surface. In some embodiments, the sealing solution is selected to ensure that the film-sealing solution combination has a suitable burn-through resistance in a direction generally normal to the first and second surfaces 12, 22, and/or through the interfacial region 30.
