Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is a semiconductor manufacturer based in Sunnyvale, California. It was founded in 1969 by a group of technology professionals that included Jerry Sanders, who famously said “Real men have fabs.” The company initially made memory chips and other components for PCs before branching out into microprocessors in the early 2000s. This was when it began to make a name for itself as a credible competitor to Intel Corporation, which has long held the top spot in the chip market. AMD acquired the microprocessor company NextGen in 1996, and released its Athlon processor—the first 1 GHz (gigahertz) chip on the market. In 2003, it introduced its Opteron chip, which was designed for use in servers. AMD also diversified its product offerings with the 2006 acquisition of ATI Technologies, which manufactured video graphics cards for PCs.
Since then, AMD has accelerated its market share with innovative products and a solid strategy that has positioned it for success. In February 2022, the company made one of its biggest acquisitions ever when it purchased adaptive chip maker Xilinx. Today, AMD’s chips can be found in Tesla models, NASA’s Mars Perseverance land rover and 5G cell towers around the world. In addition, its new Zen architecture, which was launched in 2017, has closed the performance gap with Intel significantly.
